Literature Circle Society designed the Book Club to serve at-risk school-aged children in the metro Detroit area. Research has shown that over 60 percent of low-income families have no children’s books in their homes. By providing the opportunity to be in the book club students will see improvement in their reading performance, gain access to books, and develop a positive attitude toward reading. The Book Club takes place either as an after-school enrichment or as a lunch and learn during school hours. The Book Club is facilitated by a certified teacher.
"The thing I love most about book club is the community. We are able to discuss the book in a judgment-free discussion. I feel the book club is a safe space."
~ Aliyah Thomas
One of the biggest benefits of the book club, is it has made me accountable to actually read.
~Tyron Wielder
"My favorite part of book club is the teacher and how much fun she makes reading the book."
~ Anthony Band
The goal of the book club is two-fold: for the youth in the program to increase reading proficiency and to provide students with access to books. Additionally, we aim to foster a lifelong love of reading and learning, encourage critical thinking and discussion among participants, and build a supportive community where young readers can thrive.
